Common questions:

Do you need a permit to build a bulkhead or seawall?

Yes. This type of construction often requires dredging and other serious offense to the local environment. In ALL cases these projects need a number of different permits.   If built properly a bulkheads will last an excess of 30 years. Considering they last so long period of time, it is not worth playing games for a onetime expense.

Any dock builder who is willing to build without permits or offers a story that is too good to be true should be taken with caution. If you are caught the builder WILL get a tremendous fine and risks jail time on the second offense. The home owner will also receive a hefty fine and may have to remove ALL recently constructed materials.

Do you need a permit for pier construction?

Yes.   As stated above, building a large structure, such as a pier, can possible have serious environmental effects.   We highly recommend getting a permit for this type of marine construction.  The costs for this type of construction are high; the fines for this type of construction without proper documentation are just as high.

Does a floating dock, dock, or mooring float need a permit?

Any type of item or structure that will construct on or in wetlands or waterfront homes in New York State DOES need a permit.  Many local towns and government agencies restrict the size of your dock.

Again, it is not worth the fine or lowering your property value to skip over getting a permit.

Do you need a permit for a boat lift?

Yes. This is a very touchy subject for many local towns in Long Island, New York.  Mainly due to “obstruction of view”  you may cause for your neighbors. If they wake up one day and see a large metal object in front of their seaward view, it is very likely they will contact the the local town.

Without permitting you will be asked to remove the boat lift and be given a fine.  We highly recommend contacting us you make any plans for construction.

My Dock builder said I do not need permits, is this true?

No.  As a policy, we refuse to work with or recommend any dock or bulkhead builder who does not obtain permits.

Keep in mind if you are willing to work with someone like this, you are dealing with someone who is willing to face jail time.
